U*I is the theoretical energy input for sparks out of which a fraction Fc goes to cathode side. Now, in reality not all sparks occur at U*I of input energy, but at a fraction of the same, say x. Thus the energy input to cathode will finally be x*Fc*U*I. Hence this x value is critical. I hope someone can shed some light on this.
