My lecturers used to teach courses by asking students to present the topics in the syllabus groups of 4-5 students. I did not think that this teaching technique promote better material understanding because one student presents only a fraction of the topic while there are many topics in the syllabus. Are there any empirical evidence (or at least research) of the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of this teaching technique? Thank you very much for your kind help.
Group work like this can be problematic. In the "real world" after school, your students will probably often work in groups and teams, so the skill is something they should cultivate. But caution needs to be taken to ensure that all students do their fair share of the work. If you use group work, you need a plan for how to monitor and enforce this requirement.
I agree with Michael W. Marek. And I would like to add that questions about the topic can be asked at the end of the presentation to verify if all the students worked together.

Your concern about relegating teaching responsibilities to learners is totally justified. Teachers are accountable for actualizing the curricular agenda and the course outcomes. However, students' presentations can support and consolidate the teachers' teaching plans , if and only if they complement the teacher's transmission of knowledge and information.
From your question I could not get one thing whether you make groups before you transect the content.
if it is done after the delivery of your lecture than teacher should take proper care for the formation of groups of four or five.Teacher should take care of basic features of cooperative learning strategy where student will participate and use peers as a resource. Enough research evidence is available on these cooperative learning strategies where no student can have a free ride.
