If the AI is used to access knowledge as an online library, I suppose we are, to a certain extent, already there with search engines. If we are talking about using chatbots as teachers, this is an ominous development, in my mind for the following reasons.

1) Chatbots "mine" human created works to produce responses which are often accepted as truth and without providing much information on where the information came from. That is to say, chatbots can produce BS at scale with little recourse for users to check the veracity of what they are told.

2) Learning is a human activity that benefits from human to human interaction. Do we want learning to become the equivalent of interacting with a "customer service" algorithm.

3) Learning becomes more an act of "revelation" from manipulating the chatbot than thinking about what it is you are actually learning.

4) Why bother learning anything if everything you need to know is available from a chatbot?

5) Can a chatbot guide students in a practical field like the trades, farming, or even doing scientific experiments? Would students even want to subject themselves to that?

6) Who benefits by substituting flesh-and-blood teachers with chatbots? It is certainly not the students!

And as it says George Slade… The important thing is to know how to answer questions like the ones that I collect below and at the bottom of the question is: what is meant by learning to be a competent citizen for the 21st century?
