The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) and cheap cameras has brought the possibility of handling sensors in more efficient ways. Nowadays, lots of electronic junk are discarded without salvaging electronic components - especially sensors - that could help among other things to prevent disasters from happening.
Why not having sustainable innovation? Do you know about such initiatives from academia?

Although the question has a rethoric nature, I am indeed trying to find prospective collaborators.
People only started paying more attention to this issue after the 2008 economic crisis.
I know there are lots of creative and valuable work done with salvaged components. However, researchers seem shy when it comes to sharing their experience.
I started working on viable solutions last year. I would greatly appreciate hear different opinions and real life initiatives.
I will add more to this thread anyway.

Recently, I found out that we can combine old camcords and cell phones to implement a surveillance system. We can do that with cheap electronics.
