Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Steffen Heinig, I am a researcher at Liverpool John Moores University, UK.

The LJMU Research Ethics Committee has approved our research project in the field of Higher Education.

The title of our study is “Zoom and how it is influencing Higher Education - An international survey of the current teaching and learning environment”.

As both students and lecturers have experienced a dramatic change in their normal way of teaching and learning within the last year, it has become clear that many colleagues do face similar issues.

While many of us feel additional pressure through the preparation of online content, others struggle to find a way to motivate students to participate more actively during the online-live sessions.

The gallery view with just the names of the students has become the new normal.

In this study, we intend to investigate different aspects of the current situation.

How do students and lecturers alike cope with the current situation?

What kind of behaviours can we observe within ourselves and during online live sessions?

It is the purpose of the study to investigate what motivates the people to turn off their cameras during a session and further leaves it off during break-out room activities?

The study does further investigate what kind of additional changes in terms of working habits, technology and social environment have occurred.

We are conducting this study in the form of an online questionnaire.

We are looking for students and/or lecturers in Higher Education, to participate in our study. Any distribution in your network or institution would be much appreciated.

We hope that this project will allow us to understand the situation around the globe and perhaps to identify similarities in the behaviour. At the same time, we hope to see some best practice examples, which could help us to improve the way of handling the current situation on both sides.

We are therefore hoping to reach as many potential respondents as possible and would be extremely grateful for any help you could provide.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions,

Many thanks,

Dr Steffen Heinig | Senior Lecturer | John Moores University Liverpool
