YES.. many.  You'd have to be more specific though on the type or reason for the empirical research.  I.e.  affective issues, professional, intellectual, mechanical, talents, etc.

When you state that you want to examine the education of prospective educators are you referring to new education-major graduates with little or no teaching experience or post-grad junior educators seeking professional development? For example, I recently completed my doctoral studies which includes a post-masters certificate in nursing education, but I am taking professional development courses in order to enhance my pedagogical foundation. I am wondering if a qualitative study might better suit your research question? You could explore the perspective graduate students nearing the end of their studies or post-grad junior educators just entering the workforce. With phenomenology, you might be able to use a smaller sample size if your participants are a good representation of the the population (taking extreme viewpoints into account). I think before you proceed however, you need to be more specific in you research objectives and aims. A great topic, good luck!

I have pasted below the details of a conference paper that investigates this aspect in the field of ICT. You might need to narrow your research to one domain. As indicated, Kim has done some research in the area of mathematics, there are a number of projects in Australia at the moment investigating Science Education or Technology Education etc.

My answer is YES!

I have a paper coming out in Africa Education Review later this year. The research explored and compared teacher educators' roles and professional identities in England and South Africa and argues for better training/PD. I'm afraid I am not allowed by the journal to send it out yet but if you contact me I can cut and past the reference list and you can follow up what you find useful from it. 

I would recommend you look at articles in Professional Development in Education. This journal represents 'IPDA' (the international professional development association). I have involvement with their international committee. I am also currently involved with a small-scale funded research project that looks into the professional development needs of early years educators. IPDA have an annual conference (this year it was at Aston University, Birmingham, UK). There are sometimes bursaries made available for this conference. I hope this helps!
