Gallstones are significant health problem in the western world affecting 14% of adults and is increasing with age; 8% prevalence in over 40's and 60% of over 80s. It therefore has a considerable impact on health budgets. Currently it is the most costly digestive disorder to treat. An NIH consensus report shows 10% of patients develop symptoms in the first 5 yrs and 20% in 20 years. However greater than 70% are asymptomatic. This begs the question whether there is overtreatment of gallstones bearing in mind there is considerable overlap in symptoms with functional upper GI disorders such as bloating and dyspepsia syndromes.
