The use of social media is becoming a common practice in education. These extensive (sometimes) deployment of social media push our students toward more use of social media and may isolate them from their physical society.
IS this a negative or positive thing? Are we invading their own personal/family time?
Very nice question Emad. Supporting tools never substitute the real world provided we create enough awareness including positive/negative consequences of social media. Acting as coaches while using Blended Education is a must to avoid isoltaion or other possible negative consequences.
The use of information and communications technology in education has to do with e-learning, rather than social media:
- E-learning, taken to mean all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching, entered formal higher education in the mid- to late 1990s. More than twenty years later, in the digital world of the 21st century, classroom training is no longer the most efficient training method (just as text is no longer the primary means of learning transfer).
- Notwithstanding, the lessons of past experience must be heeded: to create sustainable enterprise, the designers of e-learning programs must eschew quick-fix e-learning solutions, commonly masquerading as technology-driven learning management systems that merely automate administration, tracking, and reporting.
- E-learning solutions must pay attention to: (i) context—ensuring that the design is suitable for the context in which it will be used; (ii) scenario—situating this activity within an interesting story line; (iii) activity—paying attention to the provision of a rich learning activity; (iv) feedback—providing meaningful opportunities for student reflection and third-party criticism; (v) delivery—considering appropriate technologies for delivery; and (vi) impact—bearing in mind the personal, social, and environmental impact of the designed activity. If e-learning is to justify the publicity that now surrounds it, more efforts need to be devoted to design principles.
I liked all answers and the proposition of e-learning vs. social media. The question is still valid regardless of terminology and the application. I found that we are pushing educational activities to homes and forced our children to use more and more social media or ICT (or e-learning platforms). Would such situation require more attention in the future (as Dr. Ali mentioned), should we dig deep into more issues and think of technology influence (referring to Dr. Olivier's and Dr. Hussin answers)..
In addition to all the above answers with which I agree, it is also really interesting to consider the possibility of using AI to have intelligent social media, which can raise awareness and give warnings regarding the excessive use of social media, or to reinforce the positive behaviors and discourage the unacceptable behaviors by rewarding desired behaviors. I am of the view that the extensive and irresponssible uasge of social media by the students has adversely affected the daily routine chores of the youth. The students spend most of their time utlizing social media websites for conveying their opinions, disregarding the norms and values of the target personna non grata.
We are not only isolating them by pushing them more towards the use of social media but also we are making them physically and mentally sick. If one spends a lot of time on internet then the nature of that person becomes arrogant, his memorizing skills gets reduces over the period of time. That kind of person think less, and act less and only depends on social media to complete his/her work.
Even in some worst cases I have read the news that when "parents of a 13 year old boy has withdrawn Internet data package then that boy attacked his mother with some kind of weapon"
So situation is getting worst day by day.......Students are taking less interest in their classes.
