Yuval Harari, an Historian and Lecturer, argues in Sapiens and Homo-Deus that more humans will be driven out of the workforce. What is pertinent to educators is Harari's claim that when we feel challenged we revert back to the past for answers - a past that is both comfortable and safe. How are we teaching for future needs - for people who will no longer have a place. We cannot all be innovators, problem-solvers, creative thinkers.
An Artificial Intelligence research does not need need to win a Nobel Prize, although it can, before we start believing it's veritability. AI has been able to recreate a Noble-Prize wining Physics Quantum experiment (https://www.forbes.com/sites/bridaineparnell/2016/05/17/ai-recreates-nobel-prize-physics-experiment/#436fa2e56678). According to Andrew Ng, "Just as Industrial Revolution freed up a lot of humanity from physical drudgery, AI has the potential to free up humanity from mental drudgery". That is what AI is aimed at.
The Industrial Revolution may have led to machines that did away with humans in jobs needing strength and repetitive actions. But the takeover was not overwhelming. With cognitive powers that machines could not touch, humans were largely safe in their work. Captivating conversation is taking place about the future of artificial intelligence and what it will/should mean for humanity. There are fascinating controversies where the world’s leading experts disagree, such as: AI’s future impact on the job market; if/when human-level AI will be developed; whether this will lead to an intelligence explosion; and whether this is something we should welcome or fear. In fact, history is full of technological over-hyping. There’s also a related myth that people who worry about AI think it’s only a few years away. In fact, most people on record worrying about superhuman AI guess it’s still at least decades away. But they argue that as long as we’re not 100% sure that it won’t happen this century, it’s smart to start safety research now to prepare for the eventuality
Yes, Kiran, it is happening now. Slowly, technological advances are taking over the jobs of telephone internet people on help desks and cashiers in supermarkets and workers in factories... I feel it's not about when this is occurring but that it is occurring. How are we preparing for this future?
