The compression index in organic soils is normally very high when compared with mineral soils. In some cases the calculated settlement is larger than the initial layer thickness! Are there new techniques for calculating the settlement of organic soils that don't rely on the compression index and depend instead on changes in the void ratio, organic content, etc?
I feel that for organic soil the settlement due to secondary consolidation is influencing more rather then settlement due to primary consolidation. So, the settlement due to secondary consolidation is given in any standard soil mechanics and foundation engineering book. I recommend you to read the book named Soil Mechanics and Foundation by Muni Budhu.
My question relates to the fact that using compression index is ill-advised and was wondering if there is a new technique for comouting the ultimate settlement without the use of compression index!
