There is a spurious increase in number of journals especially online with an ISSN number from which you get requests and links to submit your articles (mostly as spam). Most of these journals ask you to pay for processing and publishing. Few journals have more than 70-80 articles published in each issue with 12 issues per year!!! The quality of the articles are very poor and most journals claim they are peer reviewed but the article content doesn't suggest so. Few journals claim that we will tell you the result of manuscript (accept or reject) after review within 24 hours!!!!! Since most journals are paid and majority of the Universities have made it mandatory to have publications in peer-reviewed journals for completing few courses, publishing has turned out as a business (in such journals). I would like to know are there in guidelines/regulatory bodies which can control this? Can we report such issue?
As university employees we are constantly reminded to NOT publish in suspicious journals, and to be well aware of the fishing that those publishing houses are doing. We are, simultaneously, asked to publish in open access journals whenever our research has had governmental sponsoring. Our solution tends to be to publish in the well-established journals that we have liked for decades, but we now pay them this extra fee for having our papers be open for everyone to read. While it is somewhat expensive, there is support to be had so that we can continue to publish in the best places. But if prices go much higher, I do not know what will happen. I do hope, in that case, for a scientists' revolution. :-)
I believe that impact factors are the real indicators of credibility of journals. Hence, we see that more generic journals, which are read more often have higher impact factors. I think that's the way to go. We should watch out for impact factors before publishing.
