There are some comments about Scheil calculations using Open Calphad (see documentation of version 5 released). It is specified that some C++ routines exist to perform such work.

A second solution would be to use the specific tool developed in PyCalphad.

Dear Mohammad,

For binary solidification, you can use - for instance - Computherm Pandat, which is free up to three components.

The strong point in favour of this specific (commercial) software is that install is easy indeed and you can use it on a windows based system - like most of my students have done since the last 10 years - after less than one hour of self training.

You should get some open databases (extension *.tdb), you can find - after registering - at Nims:

https://cpddb.nims.go.jp/index_en.html

They are available - for free - and the collection is rather complete - currently 507 binary systems.

Which is the specific alloy system you are looking for ?

Some more open - tdb compatible files - are available with minor correction for Pandat use at:

As far as I see the Computherm Pandat is not free and there's just a demo version provided for free. Actually I am focusing on the rapid solidification of a Ti based alloy. Another question, Is this software adopted for high cooling rates (around 10^-3 deg/sec)?

1) Pandat is free up to three components, I have been using it for this and other purposes with my students of the course of metallurgy at least in the last 10 year, you can download it directly from Computherm. Please download and check, and once you have done it, please inform me, thanks.

2) What is not free is the databases, I believe for Ti alloys not that much. Have a look at Matcalc databases and try to adapt them https://www.matcalc.at/index.php/databases/open-databases.

3) Scheil solidification - i.e. the calculation of solid fraction - works basically with thermodynamic assumptions and data

4) If you want to insert cooling conditions you should evaluate kinetic data, in the Pandat example book with the version of Pandat you will likely find some examples, but databases for your case are probably needed

5) I believe there is some typing mistake citing high cooling rates as for 10^-3 K/s , likely it could be 1000 K/s In any case I would suggest to use a Calphad software at first to calculate Scheil curve for ternary systems ( if you will succeed in finding a suitable open database for your Ti alloys).

Thermo-Calc academic version can be possibly used. There are demo databases available with limit of three elements. Since your is a Ti-based binary alloy, possibly you can check demo TCTI database. Or you can search NIMS computational phase diagram database: https://cpddb.nims.go.jp/index_en.html and download the corresponding .TDB file from the same by your element selection and that can be run in ThermoCalc graphical and console mode by selecting a USER-defined database. Maybe you can use PyCalphad (open source). Hope this will be helpful.

Fabio Miani : Hi, thank you again. I tried the Computherm Pandat software but I could not find the database. When installing, does it contain databases?

The first url (NIMS) did not work and searching the web would take me to the OpenCalphad website. The second one, i.e. matcalc, did not have the database I needed. Would you please help with finding a suitable database for the Ti base binary alloys?
