I am going to be doing a lot of research involving U-Pb zircon ages as well as Ar-Ar mica ages. So I want to get as clued-up as possible before I undertake any instrument/analytical training. Also I want to learn about pros and cons and data interpretation.
Brenton, Principles of Isotope Geology by Gunter Faure (1977) published by Wiley and Radiogenic Isotope Geology by Alan P. Dickin (1995) (Cambridge University Press) are two very good books to learn the principles and instrumentation. I have given the first edition dates. Revised editions of both books are available

Hi Brenton, for the zircon U-Pb I would suggest the MSA 'Zircon' book from 2003. The middle 4 papers -
"Historical development..." (Davis et al.),
"Zircon U-Th-Pb..." (Parrish and Noble)
"Considerations in zircon geochronology..." (Ireland and Williams)
"Present trends and the future..." (Kosler and Sylvester)
are a great starting point for this subject.

I'll second Isotopes: Principles and Applications (2005) by Gunter Faure and Teresa M. Mensing (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Isotopes-Principles-Applications-Gunter-Faure/dp/0471384372).
You should also check out Uranium-Series Disequilibrium: Applications to Earth, Marine, and Environmental Sciences by M. Ivanovich and Russell S. Harmon. This is basically the bible for U-series geochronology, although it's getting a little old now.

Springer just published an Encyclopedia of Scientific Dating Methods, covering all major techniques for the earth Sciences.

Hi Oliver. I think the Springer volume you mention is being published in the second half of this year. Will probably be a 'lab shelf' essential though. Especially for new grad students!
