I want to study amygdala and hippocampus cross talk in vivo , is there a way by which I can image individual neurons in this region when they are firing. Ca2+ imaging doesn't work for deep brain regions are there other ways?
There are endoscopes techniques being pioneered by mark schnitzer that would allow you to see the amygdala, (http://pyramidal.stanford.edu/publications.html) and hippocampal imaging has been done Tank (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2967725/)
Andreas Luthi and David Anderson have very elegant papers on amygdala circuit using in vivo and vitro single cell recordings and optogenetics; see e.g. Ciocchi et al. and Haubensak et al. in 10 November 2010 issue of Nature.
