Are there any techniques that can be used to establish functional connections/circuits in deep brain regions like amygdala in vivo?

I want to study amygdala and hippocampus cross talk in vivo , is there a way by which I can image individual neurons in this region when they are firing. Ca2+ imaging doesn't work for deep brain...
