You might check the Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder literatures.  There are works about the costs of raising these children in terms of monetary costs but also the negative impact on parental stress, functioning, etc.  Webster-Stratton's Incredible Years work might also have some studies that help.

I think you will find this is another of the chicken and the egg (ie which came first). scenario.  Again, I encourage you to look closely at Patterson's work and work on family systems because while the adolescent may be the designated patient, that is likely the tip of the iceberg.  Much of the developmental psychology literature in the US has adopted at least some form of the model that many child behavioral issues is a combination of a number of factors including parent temperament (i.e reactivity, patience, easy going vs easily excited) and child temperament.  So infants who start life with a neurologically reactive temperament may have parents who are also easily aroused leading to poor parenting, poor attachment etc.  Then it is sort of follow that  up the ladder and by adolescence behaviors could be extreme on both parent and child.  Worse, without intervention, the child's patterns can also effect the way he/she is perceived by less proximate influences.  See Uri Bronfenbrenners model of nested environments.   This has always been an area of interest of mine.  The farther you get away from infancy however, the less the biological impact is directly.  So the personality/temperament issues which are more biologically influenced become much more complex and influenced by huge environmental pressures.  And that is true for both parent and child.  Another interesting question not just for delinquency in boys is that delinquency in girls both evidences itself and stems from different root causes and influences.  We can't use the one model fits all theoretical approaches and not only do we need to observe behavioral changes across time but we need to use statistical analyses that can tease out insignificant as well as significant influences.  So for example I found using  multivariate hierarchical regression analyses that girls choices of career and academic training may be effected most significantly by the strength and closeness of their relationship with their mothers if that relationship is good but could be more significantly influenced by their fathers if they have a poor or strained relationship with their mothers.

 Aggression/delinquency effects also differ based on which parent you are talking about.  Another internationally know researcher you should read is Dr. Robert Cairns.  He was a crackpot personally but an absolute genius particularly looking at development of aggression, gang activity, delinquency etc.  And he understood the complexity of what we started looking at which was that development occurs as the result of the imbalance in the system, either biologically or environmentally.  We move forward developmentally when the system is not in balance.  So behavior may become the leading edge of biological and environmental change.  Really somewhat counter intuitive.  You can look at a more physiological researcher in the work of Dr. Michael Rutter.  Dr. Cairns and I co-authored a chapter in one of his books on developmental change.  You might find it interesting.  and I know it expands how you think about almost any kind of behavior development and stasis.

Developmental Psychopathology is my most exciting area of study and I studied with some of the best researchers in the area of gene/environment interplay.  Even down the evolutionary ladder to aggression in mice you can see how impossible it is to try to segregate genetic from environmental influences.  Dr. Louis Gariepy has done some seminal work in this area using generation after generation of especially bred mice (for aggression/passivity etc) and we even learn so much about aggression in females, once thought to be rare, now known to be situationally and behaviorally different but far from rare.  Not to mention we can parse out external perception such as culturally expectations of role differences especially in areas involving women in criminal activity.  Victims, methodology, situations may differ but what is most different is that we don't expect to see aggression in women, so we make excuses or just are blind to it.  By the time women are incarcerated though they spend much longer periods for the same or similar acts.  I will take a look at the Moffitt piece though things move so quickly today that 2005 is almost a light year in the past.

This was not the case with our aggressive versus non-aggressive strains of mice. We had more than 50 selections and it was easy to test their level of aggression.

But again - we must come back to answering the basic - of what variance a factor accounts for. If it is chicken and egg - then we need to begin to explore the possibility of working within a development framework but also significant life events in relation to understanding both motivation and maintenance of behavior 

Excellent point bringing up the "child effects" literature. In a study I did with Dr. Kostas Fanti, we didn't have a measure of parental psychopathology or personality, which was a real shame. But we did find that child conduct problems and callous-unemotional traits led to increases in parental distress (http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10578-013-0389-3/fulltext.html) over time. Also, Dr. David Hawes at University of Sydney did some research on bidirectional effects (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21722024) but that involved parenting practices. It's an interesting field to look at parent psychopathology/personality - needs more longitudinal study!

I have not come across any literature like this, tracking changes in parents' personality traits over time in relation to their children's behavior. It seems to me that some of the literature showing that children's behavior influences their parents' parenting strategies could be relevant, though. Jack Bates had a great chapter on children's temperaments and parenting in the Handbook of Temperament, which I co-edited with Marcel Zentner (2012, Guilford). You could request a copy from Bates directly. Here is his summary of the literature on how child temperament predicts changes in parenting:

"A few studies provide evidence that child positive reactivity might predict more parental warmth. Fewer studies have tested associations between positive reactivity and parental control, and these cross-sectional studies offered little evidence that child positive reactivity is directly linked with parental control. Findings regarding associations between child general negative reactivity and parenting warmth are complex and somewhat inconsistent. This could reflect developmental stages of sampled children (Crockenberg, 1986). It could also reflect differences between studies in how general negative emotionality or difficultness was measured (Bates, 1989). In contrast, there is more consistent evidence that fearfulness elicits more warmth. A few studies also suggest that negative reactivity may be linked with higher levels of parental control, whereas fearfulness is linked with less inconsistent parenting. We note that few studies have tested associations between negative reactivity and parenting during adolescence. Studies more consistently suggest that child self-regulation predicts parental warmth and positive forms of control. Longitudinal studies represent considerable progress in description of developmental processes involving temperament."

The child maltreatment literature identifies a number of bidirectional relationships between child behavior and parent/parenting characteristics, so that's an area worth exploring as well.
