There are a range of studies that have looked at trade offs related to land management and land use, but quite a few have not been presented using an 'ecosystem services' vocabulary. It would be worth looking at literature discussing things like 'multiple benefits from X type ofl and use,' or on the 'benefits of agri-forestry schemes' or 'multi-functional landscapes' (things along these lines). It may also be helpful to look for case studies on the environmental impacts (or biodiversity impacts) of certain land uses or management strategies, as sometimes these studies coontain information on trade offs, but without highlighting them that clearly (as they may not be the main focus of these articles).

Here are some example studies from this range of literature that might be useful to you in your search for how people have approached this methodologically in the pas. I put this list together as a part of the work that went into the following report:

All of these have at least a semi-quantitative discussion of either trade-offs between environmental benefits, or of multiple service delivery, and should be good to get you started.

The UK national ecosystem assessment is in my opinion a nice example of quantifying trade-offs in different scenarios.

In Belgium we developed a webtool where you can quantify different ecosystem services for specific projects. It is a value explorer so some processes are quit simplified.

Tradeoffs between multiple ecosystem services is definitely an area of research where there are gaps in our knowledge, especially with respect to changes in land use/cover. This is slowly changing, but is slow, mainly I think because it's difficult to quantify multiple ecosystem services.

Actually I have myself been researching this area for some years and have found significant knowledge gaps. While the current knowledge addresses the issues of tradeoffs in fairly detailed way with respect to some ecosystem services which are relatively easier to quantify and their tradeoff relationships with other services are somewhat less complicated or better understood than others, the same cannot be said for many other ecosystem services. The area becomes even more grey when dimensions of ethics, interpersonal values, reversibility and tipping points, disservices from certain ecosystems such as agriculture, and differentiating between services and benefits are included.

One of the very good papers that discusses these aspects theoretically is:

But I feel more work needs to focus on quantification of the tradeoffs and attempting to figure out the most optimal scenario for the society in adopting a particular land-use on a case-by-case basis which can serve as model for other situations. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but I feel this is one of the reasons why there is a certain amount of policy disconnect in this field. I have recently been involved in a study on valuation of forest ecosystem services which would be used in India as the compensation to be paid by agencies seeking to divert forest land for non-forest purposes. We faced a lot of challenges in attempting to quantify the services as the value had to be 'additional' and not the absolute value of ecosystem services from a particular ecosystem.
