Most drinking water is neutral (pH 7). Those who advocate use of of alkaline water believe that drinking of alkaline water will help neutralize acid in the bloodstream, leading to increased oxygen levels as well as increased energy and metabolism. Alkaline water is generally considered safe when its pH remains upto 8, but it has the potential to produce side effects when pH is much higher. It can reduce stomach acid, which may sound like a benefit if you have acid reflux. However, for most healthy people, low levels of stomach acid are likely to cause problems. You could also end up with health issues if you drink too much alkaline water.
Alkaline water with a pH higher than 11 may irritate eyes, skin and mucous membranes. It can also cause gastrointestinal problems (World Health Organization). Drinking too much alkaline water, or drinking water with a high pH, may disrupt the body’s normal pH. This can lead to a condition called metabolic alkalosis, which may cause confusion, nausea, vomiting, hand tremors, muscle twitching, and tingling in the face, hands or feet.
Thanks Kamel. I especially want to know : if we drink alkaline water (pH 8-10) obtained from a de-ionizer machine, is it good for the health? Any side effects? I came to know that such water is good for arthritis and some other diseases.
