Soil organic carbon is the main constituent of soil nutrients. Normally, structural attributes of any organism need more carbon for structural built up. Therefore, soil organic carbon (SOC) is one of the essential elements required to all level of (micro-to macro) organisms. Since depletion of organic carbon content from degraded soils is a normal phenomenon, I do not know how carbon and nitrogen contents deplete together from a severely degraded soil habitat.
