I'm currently in the process of coming up with a research pitch for a lab to be funded here in the Philippines. Rice is quite the common crop in the South East and its diseases are commonplace. Are there any other areas to be studied when it comes to rice crop viruses?
I'm particularly interested in Tungro, but any leads would be great!

the correct answer would be "It depends". If you want to study the relationship between host and virus, identification of symptoms and association with a specific virus (such as Tongro) you can try to do field trials, but you need to know how to handle the virus and how to produce virus-free material.
Otherwise I would suggest you sequencing techniques to identify and characterize novel viruses.
Likewise, I would suggest you to look towards resistance, tolerance and identification of different viral strains, which are all good research methods, but I believe those might be a bit more towards the practical research point of view.
