In recent few years, extensive work has been done regarding scaffolds for wound dressing applications rather than nanocomposite films (prepared by casting method). Are there still any advantages to be considered for films as best for wound dressings.
Hi Jagruti, two things come to mind 1) the dressing should not elicit an immune response and 2) the dressing should be impermeable to bacteria.
Currently, there are a variety of wound dressings available ranging from passive adherent/nonadherent to interactive and bioactive products that contribute to the healing process. Many of the newer dressings are designed to create a moist wound healing environment which allows the wound fluids and growth factors to remain in contact with wound, thus promoting autolytic debridement and accelerating wound healing. Even with substantial advancements in wound dressings it appears that no single material can produce the optimum microenvironment for all wounds or for all the stages of the wound healing process.

Not all wound dressings are used for the same purposes. For example, you can use some hydrogel when the wound is in the granulation phase or a film for comfort. For these reasons, you have to define the properties of the dressing that make it different from other, what type of wounds are useful and at what stage of the healing process. I mean, one dressing isn't better than other, they are used for different aims and that's what you should define.

My opinion is when compared to scaffolds, the biofilm plays a major role on burn wounds. Because biofilms are soft and and mostly biodegradable when interacts with wound site. It starts releasing of incorporated drug along with polymers, which heals the wound in faster manner. The biofilm also act as a artificial skin like structure which will be comfortable for wound site by easy mimicing.

Regarding to enhance the biodegradation rate of scaffolds in my opinion and experience, it is recommended to coat ceramics scaffold which has low chemical stability in SBF or PBS to coat with any types of polymer. The recommended polymer like PCL, IGT , etc. can be proper choice. I ask you to kindly read the following close paper related to your question.
