I’m working on isolating nonpolar to semi-polar compounds using column chromatography. So far, I’ve been using silica gel as the stationary phase, but I’m currently looking for possible substitutes — mainly due to cost and reusability.

I have come across mentions of resins like Diaion HP-20 and alumina, but I’m not sure how effective they are for alkaloid-rich plant extracts, or whether they can provide better separation or recovery in specific cases. I am particularly suspicious as they are not commonly available in the market despite their seemingly lower cost and higher efficiency.
