Are the p-norms for vectors and matrices only defined for the integer values of p?

p-norms are defined on the vectors and are also used to induce norms on matrices.

Is it a requirement of the definition, that the p be a whole number or can it be any number.

Moreover, can you quote any applications where the non-integer p-norms come in handy
