Electric vehicles are wonderful alternative to cope up the changing climate but when it comes to efficiency and availability of charging points, one needs to rethink again. The cost factor cannot be overlooked. However, transportation and long mile travel are still dependent on diesel and petrol. Cng has emerged as a better option but the same theory of feasibility applies here as well. I feel that in the current scenario, electric vehicles for shorter route and journey are best alternatives in present context. It has emerged as a tool to deal with climate change.

The long distance travel has been somehow met with the capacity of driving of 300 plus miles with full charge. The charging time can be less than an hour using a supercharger. Home chargers can charge within a few hours overnight. In fact, the cost of electricity could be less than the ever increasing gas price when equated with the same mileage.

There is a continuous and fast increase in EVs adoption in many countries due to the reduction of EVs prices, governments’ incentives and subsidies on EVs, the need for energy independence, and environmental issues. It is expected that EVs will dominate the private cars market in the coming years.

It is the best solution for transportation provided the energy does not come from fossil fuels.

The car prices are coming down and charging stations are being created, but it will take awhile before the majority of people participate. Greece has an ambitious program to replace gasoline cars with electric cars, but time will show if it gets to be successful.

Any small step towards reduction of gas exhaust is welcome to any nation, but there are some obstacles. I believe, this is normal for any new technology. I am positive, by next year you will see plenty of electric cars on the road of Athens and other places of Greece.

As demand increase, car production will increase with higher efficiency. Initial drawbacks in car manufacturing will be overcome with new models. Installation of sufficient charging stations is another area which government can assist.

Yes I agree with your statement that electrical vehicles can be one of the solutions of global climate change. Lot of research are being carried out globally by automobile giants in proving the efficiency and bringing down the costs of electrical vehicles. There will be need to determine the net emissions using electrical vehicles. I think there will be emissions during construction of power houses, charging stations and mining of copper for electrical wiring.

Electric vehicles (EV) are an important part of achieving global climate change goals. However, although there are no direct greenhouse gas emissions from electric vehicles, the electricity they use still largely comes from fossil fuels in many parts of the world. Energy is also used to make vehicles—especially batteries. The comparison between EV and traditional vehicles is complicated. They depend on the size of the vehicle, the accuracy of the fuel economy estimates used, how the electricity emissions are calculated, the assumed driving pattern, and even the weather in the area where the vehicle is used. There is no single estimate that applies to all places. Emissions related to the production of EV batteries also have great uncertainties, and the figures obtained by different studies vary greatly.

It definitely will help (at least for some regions in the world) to combat climate change, since the transportation sector is number 2 emitter of CO2 to the atmosphere. However, speaking about the current status-quo, EVs may not the best option environmentally in every place! If the grid mix is full of fossil (e.g. coal), then it's better to drive ICV than EV.

You may check one of my research papers where according to our results, driving an EV in Michigan is not an environmentally-friendly (emissions will be higher), due to their energy mix and weather (that impact charging eff. and vehicle's consumption).

Hi Rajat Chakraborti they are certainly part of the solutions, and it seems the development of cheap EVs from China will help their accessibility in more countries, but the main challenge will be the infrastructure to charge these vehicles. Battery development (quicker charge and improved charge holding) will help. A great and important question.

Not long ago, most electric vehicles – or EVs – were oddball cars that looked quirky and couldn’t drive very far before needing to be recharged. Some were difficult to find on the market, and others were expensive or even impossible to maintain.

Those days are gone.

Today, EVs are the most exciting and pioneering sector of the automotive market. Although most drivers still drive gas-burning vehicles, the market is headed in a new direction. As of this writing, Tesla’s market cap (or total worth) is higher than the combined values of Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, Honda, and Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles).

There are all sorts of reasons people buy EVs. Although many EVs are pricier, there are state and federal tax credits totaling thousands of dollars. Many shoppers look at this tax credit as a sort of discount on the car itself.

Some folks like the convenience of never having to go to the gas station. With an EV, you can park your car at home or in an EV-designated parking spot with a charger, and it will charge itself to be ready for the next use. Level 1 charging uses a household-style plug, and this method takes a very long time. Most EV drivers use Level 2 charging stations, which employ a special plug but can still be installed in your house or community. Many models can also be charged using DC fast charging, which can fill your car to 80% battery from empty in as little as 20 to 30 minutes.
