Interesting question Javed Saab. Each year we try to explain to our students that there are only four main normative theories and their question is always the same. Where do we lie? Answering them with Development Communication Theory & Democratization/Democratic Participant Media Theory does not solve the problem. Looking forward to more reponses.
Media development Theory, i think, is the offshoot of Authoritarian theory, where media is conformed with Government, though for development. I think we can merely draw the relation in two theories; Authoritarian and libertarian.
Interesting idea and Javed Sahib and somehow i agree with Quratulann. I think Normative theories are more based on Western Models. In developing countries like Pakistan we need to come up with new dimensions for explaining relations between state and media. Here initially at the time of independence press was more ideological based but now the situation is entirely different. Moreover our electronic media developed as an industry is very young , so we need to analyze the situation to understand that where we stand. Looking forward to what others have to say about this.
I think its difficult to divide the relations of state and media, in some part of the world the relationship is more towards authoritarian in nature just like in China, Cuba, Russia, and Arab World etc. And Europe mostly inclined towards libertarian school of thought, where there is no such direct interference can be seen of media content. And in some countries like Pakistan and India the relationship is in between authoritarian and libertarian, we can see some social responsibility too but its all about that how mature the media is?
