There is discussion about PAA (poly acrylic acid) whether it is considered as green chemical or not, especially in its biodegradability issue. PMA is mre green than PAA.
Please, can you suggest green polymers could be used for water treatment applications, especially with low MW. Thanks

would you please specify the case of this water tretment. Is it by flocclation or ion exchage or any other form of polyme treatments. Well, for instance biopolymers are by far more greener than synthetic ones.. Regards

Thanks for your reply. They are widely used as scale inhibitors in desalination. I just want to know if they are classified as green, if the molecular weight is not exceeding 5000.

Hello dear, the polyacrylic acid is not classified as green, because this material is not obtained from renewable resource or it is biodegradable. In the case of the polymaleic acid, this can be suffering hydrolytic degradation with NaOH solution, but I don't know if it is biodegradable

recently I got a connection with Dr. Chris fellows for quite a while and we have exchanged some papers on this topic. I strongly encourage you to contact him for this application, since he is a menmber of the RG website. This school year I am suppervising a master project on the same subject, in which we want to play on the architecture of the PAAc main backbone for the enhancement of its performance with regard to the scale inhibition efficiency.
For the case of maleic anhydride polymers, I have some papers on its use as a carrier in the drug delivery, something that may point out to its acceptability as a green polymer since it is accepted by the biological system. Regards

Hello Mr. Zeino. PAA is definitely not green. I do not know whether the PMA is considered green. As green polymers are polymers of vegetable origin, quaternized starches, quaternary ammonium tannates (Acquapol) and some products obtained from seaweed in Japan (Gellanic).
