Where can I have free access to data on financials, corporate governance and other company information on banks in the European Union countries? I tried individual bank websites but not all of them publish annual reports in English. Any free database or colleagues with access to Bankscope, SNL Financials etc could be helpful.

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately the information there pertains to central banks of member countries instead of individual banks.
The best available data for European banks is through bankscope. This is the detailed data you can get for a time series and is suitable for financial modelling.
Yes, I agree with Prof. Osama. Bankscope is one of the alternatives, beside that we have Bloomberg. However, both services comes with the subscription fee.
Ellis, specifically for free uniform bank data (possibly comparable to FDIC's in the future), it appears that the ECB is working on a project called BIRDS, which will be available on the first quarter of 2017. http://banks-integrated-reporting-dictionary.eu/project-status

I suggest to use Zephyr database or FacSet. They have a wealth of information and the former is very user friendly. Unfortunately they are not free, but normally the universities that are subscribed allow you daily access with payment of a low fee
