You could also use global climate data, because it seems that precipitation data for Kenia are scarce.

Thanks for the reply Frank! We've been trying to secure data from KMD (referencing your last link), but can't seem to find the right channel - if you have had any success with this in the past, it would be great to know of your approach. Also FYI - our project will collect point-level data on soil profiles (using mobile phone technologies) to combine with these global databases - so we hope to complement the FAO data. Regional level data from FAO has been easily accessible, but yes, national/sub-national Kenya data is a different story.

Great - thanks for checking Frank. And FYI.....came across this site recommended by colleagues (https://beaumont.tamu.edu/climaticdata/CountryMap.aspx?index=4_24&name=KENYA) from Texas A&M (USA) that offers some basic climatic data (temp, precip, wind speed). Not sure if they are using the same weather stations the Kenya Meteorological Dept. are using, or if they built their own. No soil data there, unfortunately. For your records....

Depending on the area of Kenya, there are decent surveys on soil and climate available e.g. Geological Surveys of the 1950s published by the Colony and Protectorate of Kenya; R. Jätzold & H. Schmidt published detailed data in 1983 (Farm Management Handbook of Kenya, various volumes); the various Kenya Soils Surveys might be also of interest (D.O. Michieka et al. 1978). Hope this helps a bit.
