Hi everyone.
I currently doing my master thesis on collapse of subsea pipelines with thick coating. Normally in designing pipelines coating is neglected and I am trying to simulate whether adding the coating will have positive or negative effect on the collapse capacity of the pipeline. I have been using Abaqus for a few weeks for this task and am not experienced with it let alone modelling polymer (coating).
Now in my problem is adding the material property to the coating part. I have only been working with steel before. I have found formulas that represents stress-strain curves for PP and PP foam. Strain rate and temperature effects are neglected.
By doing so can I model the coating as a very "week" steel in ABAQUS" or would that be very wrong?
Of course, you can take into accountl the polymer coating such way after constructing two-layer model of pipe with external layer having very low (in comparison with steel one) Young modulus.

Hello Ramin,
you can made a shell pipe of almost the same dimension of your pipe and can provide composite layup in the material property for the shell.then in assembly assemble both pipes so it will act as coating and you can do your analysis, hopefully this might solve your problem.

@Mithilesh Kumar Dewangan: thanks for your answer, I understand your advice is related to the geometrical composition of the problem(?) If so i tried that approach first but found a better way. I only make a thick pipe and the partition it circumferentially i.e one section over another. In this way there would be no issues with contact surfaces etc. as the part behaves like one body but with two sections and two different material definitions.

well partition is a better strategy to create separate materials in a single part but if you have a complex assembly then it might be difficult so you can try shell and solid combination and don't forget to add constraints for solid and shell. All the best
I am doing a riks analysis with the set pressure of 60 MPa, however that is not relevant as the pipe collapses way before reaching that pressure. So the analysis are for deep water subsea pipelines. Regarding the contact surface it is assumed zero separation before and at the moment of collapse, and I believe that is a fairly ok assumption, but yes it can be discuses:)
