Congratulations on starting your MSc program! I am sure you'd do well. For the research topic, I'd recommend you speak to your program lead, or supervisor about it.

An interesting area to look into is coupling machine learning models with physics based simulators for improved reservoir characterization.

You might consider finding a dataset with with a good amount of associated non-seismic data to pursue something like Mahmoud's characterization of carbonate or unconventional reservoirs. Because the seismic response is non-unique, meaningful research must incorporate data that supports one of the many possible explanations for the response. It is extremely important to understand how the frequency content of your seismic data controls vertical resolution and how that relates to the actual size of the geologic feature you are interested in. For over three decades, I saw interpreters make mistakes by assuming the data had higher resolution than it actually did. Consequently, their work did not carry any useful predictive power and often led to bad business decisions. Finding a comprehensive dataset where you could emphasize the problem of vertical resolution could be impactful. It would probably be very easy to incorporate AI workflows into such a problem. I'd recommend not doing a project that just demonstrates AI. Use AI to learn something about how to make better interpretations. People will notice your work if you do that. Congrats.
