I am doing research in IC engine. Nano fuel additives is readily available in markets. but I wish to know the procedure of mixing nano power material with diesel fuel.
The most important paramtertic studies of diesle fuel are its SIT, viscosity, calorific value of the fuel and cetane number. Please see that they may be effected. Problems may occur with the injection process. .As far as blending is considered, procedure is the same as it is adopted for heat exchangers. Anyhow it is a good attempt.
Nano fuel additives like nano sized metal oxides will improve burning efficiency.. but there are serious questions about the impact of these additives on environment.. especially diesel exhaust particulates & tail pipe soot .
Once the combustion is improved with the blending of nano particles with the fuel, there may not be problems related to PM but it may increase the oxides of nitrogen as gas temparatures will increase. However, as Dr. Sridhar V, said, PM may increase with the increase of density of fuel as density is related to PM. Hence it is difficult to predict at this stage, unless experimentation is carried out. Hence work in this direction is appreciated and worthy.
There are two methods for nanofluid (nanoparticle dispersed fluid) preparation:
1) Two step process: in which nanoparticles of your interest are prepared separately. Then these particles are dispersed in the base fluid (here, diesel) by ultrasonication, or mechanical agitation

2) One step process: This is best suited for metallic based nanofluids. In this process, nanoparticles are synthesized and dispersed simultaneously in the base fluid.
let me tell you something, you should firstly concentrate on making of nano materials. Once you have the nanomaterials there are various ways by which even insoluble nanomaterials can be made soluble in any solvent. Like we can functionalize the materials, We can use core-shell kind of structure etc.
First decide whether you are going for single or two step process synthesis
we have experimented a nanocatalyst additive( two different concentrations on mass basics) for improving the combustion and we achieved increase in BTH,reduction in TFC,reduction in Nox,hc,but slight increase in CO.it has been prsented in international conference at NIT trichy and we arepreparing to publiish shortly.i can help u in all the way sir
There are many nano powders available in the market. May i know which nano powder like ZnO, Al2O3 etc. will be best for diesel-ethanol-water blending? and what form (powder or liquid) of nano material will be suitable?
I have studied in many paper where authors used surfactant. So will you please explain how to mix nanoparticles using surfactant in a step by step process.
