I am not a specialist in design studio culture in architecture. However, I have taken part in discussions concerning studios as a place of knowledge exploration, dissemination and exploitation. Apart from the many positive features, one issue has popped up in several discussions. This is the closed nature of studios, which appears at least in two aspects. The first one is being closed spatially. (The typical characteristic of traditional studios is that they are physical work-space orientated and this is not the best model/option in the age of Internet and World Wide Web, when information aggregation, dissemination and communication with clients/peers/experts should be practiced online and real time (->> transformation to “virtually-augmented connected studio”)). The second one is being closed methodologically. (The design studios usually work with team-orientated creative analysis, conceptualization, design and prototyping methods and instrumentation, but research methodologies are not considered, or are benefited from just at a restricted scale (->>consideration of design inclusive architectural research and practice-driven architectural research)).
