Cost effectiveness is difficult (impossible?) to assess without detailed knowledge of the system under discussion. What is clear however, is that while phased arrays (AESAs now) are initally more expensive, they eliminate the need for servo control and pointing hardware and are far more accurate than a standard dish.

This type of antenna array uses a "digital beamforming" after Analog-to-digital converters (ADC) of receiver channels, without phase shifters, and is more cost-effective than phased antenna arrays.
