Yes, there is a relation between Vit.D and Respiratoty tract infection, you can review the following article:Role of vitamin D in children with respiratory tract infection.
Int J Immunopathol Pharmacol. 2013 Jan-Mar;26(1):1-13.
In my experience vitamin D makes really a difference in preventing severe and recurrent viral episodes in certain sub-groups of children. I am currently using vit D supplements of at least 2000 UI/day in asthma children and recurrent wheezers, with success. In pediatric severe asthma patients on chronic ICS therapy, vitamin D supplementation seems to be a significant steroid-sparring approach.
In adults are published data [Difficult asthma: assessment and management, Part 2.
Allergy Asthma Proc. 2012 Jul-Aug ;33(4):313-23.].
In children I have heard dr Saglani from The Royal Brompton Hospital London and Imperial College London presenting similar data in the Severe Asthma Forum in Gothenburg 2012.
Studies have shown that there is a link between vitamin D levels and the risk of getting a respiratory infection.Respiratory infections occur more often in the wintertime. Vitamin D levels are also known to be lower in the winter. Some researches have shown that taking vitamin D supplements can help to prevent respiratory infections, but results are mixed. However, it’s not proven that taking vitamin D will help to treat respiratory infections.
