In my professional work I am thinking to design a market based livelihood alternative program for forest dependent communities in rural areas of Nepal where we have to ensure equitable benefit sharing as a major expected outcome. I would like to know any evidence based research that mentions in what conditions and context market could be responsible and accountable for pro-poor and gender responsive outcomes?
Not sure if this is what you are looking for but we have done dome work in Behar India looking at how projects run by JIIVIKA or jveeka programmes which target women in delivering support interact with infrastructural improvement strengthened female market position of some women.
You may wish to refer to our book on 'Transforming Rural Communities in China and Beyond' (Springer 2015). http://www.springer.com/gp/book/9783319113180. Especially Chapter 3: Market-based financing mechanism and design of voluntary trading platform for China forest carbon sinks', and Chapter 4: 'Carbon trade, forestry land rights and farmers' livelihood in rural communities in China'. China has system of forest property rights that can benefit incomes of rural farmers. This can operate more effectively (with more equitable benefit sharing) when farming communities have a cooperative, rather than farmers buying and selling their rights individually. If you wish to pursue further, I could put you in contact with a co-author at Renmin University, Beijing. Another colleague runs research centre for modern forestry in Lin'an, with research on ability of bamboo plantations to generate carbon credits. His work has benefited farmers in Lin'an and far beyond.
