I just want to know: the breeding techniques in the production of hybrid seed, composite seed and synthetic seed as well as the advantage and disadvantage of using each of the variety in crop improvement program
In a Synthetic Variety lines are tested for Genetic Combining Ability
Composite Variety lines are not tested for Genetic Combining Ability
1
In a Synthetic Variety Crossing in all combination of number of lines that combine well with each other is performed
In a Composite variety lines are mixture of the seeds of several phenotypically outstanding lines it and encouraging open pollination to produce crosses in all combination among the lines
2
In a synthetic Variety 4-10 numbers of parents are involved.
In a Composite varitey Many numbers of parents involved.
3
In a synthetic variety it is tested for GCA.
In a composite it is not tested for GCA
4
In a synthetic variety the Cost of seed is less than composite variety.
In a composite variety the Cost of seed is less than hybrid.
5
In a synthetic variety there It shows less heterosis than hybrid.
IIn a composite variety there is more heterosis than synthetic.
6
In a synthetic variety it is reconstituted or re done
In a composite variety it is never Reconstituted.
7
In a synthetic variety Prediction of performance possible.
In a composite Prediction of performance is not possible.
8
In a synthetic maintenance of variety easy.
In a composite maintenance of variety is difficult but easier than hybrid.
Thank Mohammed Abate generally the best top yield comes from single cross hybrids. The use of synthetics and composites give lower seed cost and ability to adapt to severe environments based on diversity of the genetics in play. Compared to single cross hybrids 3 way hybrids and 4 way hybrids give near top yield and greater ability to foster diversity and stress response.
