Regarding LCA, we have published several articles about the environmental influence of EU regulation in microwaves, kettles and vacuum cleaners and we have compared from the environmental perspective the glass and plastics food savers (commonly known as Tupperware). Finally, we have recently published an educational article about our experience of including LCA through a free software in the chemical engineering curricula of one the top 25 Chemical Engineering Departments of the World. A circular economy is an alternative to a traditional linear economy (make, use, dispose) in which we keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them whilst in use, then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of each service life.

An interesting question to be investigated within the CE domain is: to which extent is a CE business model good for the environment?

If I create a product-service system (PSS) which promotes a CE-approach (e.g., reuse, virtualize --> see RESOLVE Framework from Ellen MacArthur Foundation attached), is there any risk that the environmental performances of it (e.g., energy use, or water use, or GWP) backfire in the long run?

For answering this question, a systemic approach is needed: understanding how the use phase of the PSS works and for how long it lasts, what new needs the PSS triggers, what environmental performance really matters, etc.

I recently proposed a model to quantify this aspect by proposing an environmental-break even point
