I'm interested in the role of social control in urban governance, especially in developing countries and transitional economies. However, I can find very few studies on social control. I will appreciate it if someone could point to some studies on this topic.
Social control are basically a social processes by which the behaviour of individuals or groups is regulated. Since all societies have norms and rules governing conduct all equally have some mechanisms for ensuring conformity to those norms and for dealing with deviance. Social control is consequently a pervasive feature of society, of interest to a broad range of sociologists having differing theoretical persuasions and substantive interests. Generally thre are two type of social control i.e. repressive or coercive forms of control and ideological forms of control . repressive or coercive forms of control are the hard techniques, including direct physical constraint—and the softer ideological forms of control that operate through the shaping of ideas, values, and attitudes. The best recent discussions of the topic are Stanley Cohen 's Visions of Social Control (1988) and Jack P. Gibbs 's Control: Sociology's Central Notion (1989). These are the spaces where all elements of society witness, absorb and perform the enforcement of social norms, where they are produced and reproduced for everyone to see.
