I see quite a few paper and international reports (still) using NDVI to assess vegetation cover and standing biomass in arid and semi-arid environment where the vegetation displays a low cover (less than 30%, hence the rest being bare soil), very low standing biomass of sclerophytic plants often with leaf orientation parallel or oblique to direct sunlight and not much green. Is the use of NDVI appropriate in this case ? what about using PVI or TSAVI or other VI in arid environments with low vegetation cover?
