Any designs and recommendations for an RS232 Character Generator?

I am working on an RS232 Character Generator using a 555-timer and a CMOS 4017 decade Johnson Counter. Does anyone have a reliable design and/or some recommendations. I appreciate your feedback and help. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
