Centers for Disease control and prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have announced food safety alert regarding the outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections linked to onions in various states in America.
Salmonella enterica serotype Newport isolates resistant to at least nine antimicrobials (including extended-spectrum cephalosporins), known as serotype Newport MDR-AmpC isolates, have been rapidly emerging as pathogens in both animals and humans throughout the United States.
In addition to the resistance to five drugs found in Salmonella serotype Typhimurium DT104, this Salmonella serotype Newport, called serotype Newport MDR-AmpC, is also resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, cephalothin, cefoxitin, and ceftiofur and exhibits decreased susceptibility to ceftriaxone (MIC ≥ 16 μg/ml). Some serotype Newport MDR-AmpC strains have shown resistance to gentamicin, kanamycin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. A multistate outbreak of serotype Newport MDR-AmpC infections was reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and raw or undercooked ground beef was implicated as the vehicle of transmission.
The recent outbreak if Salmonella Newport was first reported on Jul 10, with just a handful of cases in three states. The 212 cases include 31 hospitalizations, but no deaths have been reported. The newly affected states include Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Maine, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Virginia.
Salmonella Newport is defined by the CDC as a clinically and epidemiologically important serovar that is resistant to different varieties of drugs. During the outbreak of Salmonella Newport this year 2020, it is reported that as of September 1, 2020, there is a total of 1,102 people who were infected by this strain coming from at least 47 states. This is the most recent report coming from the CDC. It is said that the very first case of this outbreak began on June 19, 2020, wherein most of the infected people are women. Also, there are no certain age groups that are affected by this new strain of Salmonella. In recent studies, it is said the main cause of this outbreak is contaminated onions. As of the moment, the CDC is still ongoing about this new strain. The symptoms of this are also the same strains of Salmonella wherein the infected person might experience, diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps that may last for 12-72 hours after infection.
