One recurrent topic when managing zoological collections is that many specimens has not information of date when it was collected, dead or prepared. This information (besides the collecting place or author) is very relevant from a scientific perspective. There are many analytical methods to date old material that have been developed in the field of palaeontology and archaeology (i.e C14; U-To; K-Ar, termoluminescense, ranging from 200-500.000 years).

However, I wonder if any objective and faithful method has been developed for dating 10-200 years-old specimen made in organic material like skin, hair-feathers or bones. There are some indirect methods for taxidermies like the presence of As, eyes design, authorship etc., but I find them very inaccurate and only applied for local collections.

Any idea or paper?

Thanks in advance.

Javi
