I am planning to use aminosilane eg. APTMS, APS and etc.
What I have read is that it needs to stored in cool, dark and dry place whereas for transferring of silane to beaker of water alcohol mixture needs to be done in nitrogen blanketing.
For those who have handled amino silane before,
Does anyone know if we can store silane in a fridge (perhaps the silane container in another container with silica gel, to provide dry environment)?
Any tips on how to transfer aminosilane to water/alcohol mixture other than using nitrogen blanketing? (Since, I heard that it is sensitive to moisture and hydrolyze easily?)
Feel free to give any other tips in handling and storing of aminosilane. I am relatively inexperience when it comes to using silane.
Hi, The alkoxysilanes (APTMES, APS, MPS etc.) you mentioned are reasonably stable: The are sold in brown colored, crown cap bottles. So each time you can withdraw the measured amount you need with a syringe instaed of opening the bottle and to prevent air or moisture enter inside. You can store it in fridge at 4 degree centigrade. When you first open the bottle write a date on the container. If it is open for a long time then you have to check how much it is hydrolysed. May be by NMR or HPLC. No any specific handling measures are needed.
Yes APTES is quite stable, but once is opened in air atmosphere it starts to react with the moisture in the air. So my preference is to use a syringe to transfer reagent in a reaction mixture. However, it depends on your reaction sensitivity to the purity of APTES. From my personal experience, if APTES is used for silanization of surfaces in solution phase, the purity of APTES is really important. But in other cases, for example, some particle modification in polar media or gas phase silanization is not very sensitive and no special precautions are needed.
With Micro contact Printing its easy to handle and you can even form microsopic patterned surfaces.

I have received APTMS and MPTMS silane bottle without a crown cap.
can i open the bottle and store in the desiccator? are therse silanes are stable ...
i want to prepare the monolayer on the glass surface.
just bought the APTMS and MPTMS silane bottles .. found out it doesn't have a crown cap. i think these silanes are very sensitive to moisture.. Can i open the bottle and store it in a desiccator at room temperature. are they stable..?
