What is your (copyright) experience related to publishing journal articles with similar themes (research questions, up to a point, similar wording) to those that you have in a published book?
Do you have book publishers objecting to publishing a journal article which tackles similar themes to those published in a book chapter, for example, when there is a general, non-competing clause in the agreement for publishing the book?
Or in general, do the publishers kindly give you permissions to do so? (i.e. because such permission is customary in trade).
Any advice or examples on how you handled this, as well as off list replies would be much appreciated.
The copyright law of the U.S., including the principle of "fair use". This principle allows reproduction without permission (though giving credit is applicable) of part of a work when done for specific purposes, which include use in teaching and research.
Currently, there is a marked tendency to release the use and reproduction of texts.
In Europe , you can legally get a book published , composed verbatim copies of up to 25 % of previous works and citing them properly.

I also got a private answer from one of my colleagues, who wished to say the following (I reproduce it, because it raises some interesting points to be debated):
“…let me mention my thoughts. It is difficult for journals to publish material that has appeared in books or in other journal articles because the most important criterion for journal article publication is originality. The editors will reject papers which are not original.
On the contractual issue, these contracts are normally standard; I'm sure the book contracts I have signed contain the same clauses. But this does not stop you from developing further an argument you have included in the book and producing a separate article on it. But they would prevent you from using a chapter from the book and submitting it to a journal….”
