The unit processes used for the removal of ammonium are:

 - Physical treatment: stripping

 - Ion exchange treatment. The use of clinoptilolite (natural zeolite) has sometimes been suggested for the removal  of NH4, but its implementation is costly. It is possible to use natural resins, zeolites (chabazite, modernite, clinoptilolite), or synthetic resins, the latter being preferred for reasons of longevity and ease of use. These, of cationic type, fix the calcium and magnesium ions and, to a lesser extent, the ammonium ions. Their use is therefore justified only in the context of a softening treatment. They then allow the removal of ammonia and even possibly some cationic micropollutants (arsenic, gallium ...). This method relies on the exchange of the ammonium ions contained in the water with sodium ions contained in the resin.

 - Chemical oxidation treatment: chlorine. The oxidant used is chlorine, which is injected at a concentration beyond the critical point (break-point) so that it reacts with all the nitrogen compounds present in the water. In theory, this amounts to adding 9.8 mg Cl2 / mg NH4 + (stoichiometric dose). However, the current levels are generally close to 13 mg Cl2 / mg NH4 +, in order to take account of other chlorine demands, and in particular those of organic materials. Ammonia is difficult to remove from water. A broad spectrum of physico-chemical technologies for the removal of nitrogen from wastewater is available: ammonia air and steam stripping; ammonia vacuum distillation; ammonia precipitation as struvite; ammonia and nitrate removal by selected ion exchange; breakpoint chlorination; chloramine removal by selected activated carbon; ammonia adsorption on charcoal; chemical reduction of nitrate; advanced oxidation processes to convert ammonia and organic-N into nitrogen gas or nitrate. It can be removed by cation exchange resin in the hydrogen form, which requires use of acid as a regenerant. Degasification can also be effective. Neither of these methods is easily adapted to residential use.

The ammonia precipitation as struvite, has the advantage that remove PO4, if you have some other compounds, it can be useful.

When you have an effluent with ammonium, and if you had phosphate as a pollutant your limiting reagent would be Magnesium which is added as MgO. The pH is an important  factor,  to get the struvite precipitate. I hope this will helpfull for you.
