Can you think of any alien invasive plants, conspicuous enough and commonly seen along roads, that could be targeted for road surveys? In particular using Google Street View (GSV), i.e. using photos taken from the road. It can be plants only distinguishable in some seasons like when flowering.
I know a few like Acacia dealbata, Cortaderia selloana, Ailanthus altissima, Eucalyptus globulus, Arundo donax. A study conducted in Canada using GSV also suggests several other target species (Mazerolle 2010). I was interested in knowing potential target species from other regions. Can you add some?

It depends on the region for which you are working . Prosopis juliflora is very good for this purpose in Indian sub continent and many parts of Africa .
That is a very nice suggestion. I would like to gather potential target species from all around the world since I will talk about GSV as a tool for the study of invasive plants in a conference. I was hoping that everyone feel familiar with some of the potential study species. Thank you for the help
Some of the tree and shrub species can be targeted as mention by Dr. Tewari Prosopis juliflora and others like Lantana camara, Eucalyptus spp., can be enumerated for there spread.
Fallopia genus is easily distinguished, throughout the vegetation period. Need to be careful with different species as besides F. japonica, in Europe, there is a hybrid Fallopia x bohemica.
I had a great experience in mapping Ailanthus altissima in Serbia, easily distinguished. Potential suggestions could be Helianthus tuberosus, Solidago giantea, Asclepias syriaca - herbaceous plants. Robinia pseudoacacia, Broussonetia papyrifera maybe for woody species.
Thank you Goran Tmušić for the remark and the suggestions, even though they now come a bit late for the conference. They may be helpful in later works though. I guess that the main limitation for some species you pointed out is the season of the imagery, as their identification relies strongly on flowering. I also made some trials with A. altissima in Portugal and it seems to work exceptionally well.
I made reference to some of the species suggested by some colleagues, such as Prosopis spp., Heracleum mantegazzianum and Falopia Japonica. Also talked about A. altissima. In fact, even prepared a video searching for A. altissima in train rails.
Hello Ernesto; Better late than never! If you intend to include more species in your surveys here are some that might be detectable in Southern California. Ailanthus, Ricinus communis, Fraxinus velutina, and Schinus terebinthifolia. These are particularly invasive in riparian margins. Best regards, Jim Des Lauriers.
Thank you James Des Lauriers. I made a presentation about this topic in a conference in 2017 (EMAPI). My purpose with this question was to present some examples of target-plants for an international audience to be familiarised with. So yes, the answer came a bit late. I managed to spot Leucaena leucocephala, Giant mimosa and Acacia mangium just by using Google map... and verified it on the actual site, very useful for a preliminary survey...
