I think that AI could occupy some roles of EFL teachers. Students for example interact with AI in conversarion practice, getting replys to their queries. Even they can get simple evaluation to their productions. I think the teachers role will be minimized to evaluation students essays, research papers and prrsentation.

I think humanities have started facing the existential threat of disappearing from the curriculum of universities around the globe. I know that I'm not answering the discussion directly, but let us face the bitter truth by looking at figures and numbers of students who are still interested in taking admission to humanities, including languages and literature. Is the cause of the drop in numbers, the emergence of AI that replaces human creativity, I don't know. We need studies that support these arguments.

Thank you Saleh Altam @ I agree with you that the number of enrolled students in human and social sciences are getting decreased. But it might not be because of AI. Can we say that the role of language teacher would disappear with the advent of AI? Can students learn language without a teacher in AI? what are the pro and cons of such learning autonomy?

We (with an esteemed co-author) have just completed a study on the attitudes of EFL learners towards the potential of AI in learning languages. Intriguingly, there seems to be a considerable amount of reservation against the usefulness of AI in learning a language. Learners seem perceive AI as an assistant for the instructors rather than imagining it at the heart of teaching in the future. Quite many students from different universities (more than 700 participants) took part in the survey and we did not observe much optimism, indeed. Besides, there seems to be a consensus among the participants that AI will never be able to replace human teachers and instructors in the classrooms.

My personal belief is also partly in line with the findings of our study. Generative AI and LLMs are rather new and they have constantly been developing. Improvements largely focus on filtering/tailoring the generated output, and humanization of these algorithms. However, as an advocate of the psychological aspect of language learning, I do not believe that AI will manage to generate feelings. It might be a stirring development for many, with its puzzling responses, but in the future, it might well be among the other supplementary tools they were once as breathtaking as current AI tools.
