Navigation and the brain has been extensively studied, especially by Eleanor Maguire in her series of ‘taxi driver’ studies. The main region is the posterior hippocampus. ‘Grid cells’ and ‘place cells’ are related to our ‘inner GPS’ as discovered by O’Keefe and Moser & Moser who won the Nobel Prize in 1971 and 2014.
Hi Dr Dennis, Grid cells located in entorhinal cortex adjacent to hippocampus control navigation. Grid cells are called GPS system of brain. There may be some role of place cell in hippocampus.. Thanks
