I noticed that some paper, which mainly about the gene polymorphisms, commonly classified the severity of UC into severe colitis and mild+moderate colitis. that is they often compared the distributions of genotypes between the severe colitis and mild+moderate colitis. that is why? whether is there some significant difference between them, mechanism? treatment? or something else? why should not classified the moderate+severe colitis as a group and compared them with mild colitis? thanks!
Xia, I recommend you to revise the Montreal classification of inflammatory bowel, where you will find clear definition of UC severity stages (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1856208/). Very often researcher and practitioners combine mild-moderate vs severe UC, because of the treatment activity: for rectal mild-moderate UC - mesalazine (per rectum), for distal or extensive mild-moderate UC - also mesalazine (per rectum + per os). If no remission, or severe US activity - prednisolone (p.o./i.v) and so on.....according to the treatment response, location and extensiveness of UC and treatment scheme. But for scientific research, you can classify, divide the group for 4 separate groups according to officially accepted classification (S0 - Clinical remission; S1 - Mild UC, S2 - Moderate UC, S3 - Severe UC)
