Abaqus simulation: how to simulate the break of a brittle material?

Hello,

I am trying to run a simulation on abaqus.

I have a cylinder of diameter 0.5 mm and length 31 mm inserted in a hollow cylinder of dimension 0.5 the inner diameter, 0.64 the outer diameter, 31 mm the length.

The cylinder is made of glass, the hollow cylinder is made of phynox. They are both brittle materials.

I want to know when the glass cylinder is going to break.

The last 4 mm of the hollow cylinder are fixed and a force is applied on the other edge of the hollow cylinder.

Finding a teacher in this time is really hard and I really hope some members of the community can give me some advice to model on Abaqus.

What sort of contact you have assigned in between the two materials. That matters a lot

surface to surface contact

contact property : tangential behaviour penalty

normal behaviour all by default

I have also tried with frictionless, and lagrange multiplier but it didn't work

Unfortunately I cannot open the model. However, as far as I understood, the overall behaviour of the cantilever depends on whether: i) the two hollow cylinders are glued together (i.e. they behave as a single body) and ii) there is some interference between them. If they are glued without interference, the system is nothing more than a cantilever with tip load. Therefore I would first try a simplified approach by analytical formulas. If you neglect possible pre-existing cracks, you can look at the max tensile principal stress as a criterion for failure. Be careful, however, that if you use a fem analysis, a stress singularity may occur at the clamp depending on how you model the fixture
